Full list of Southend-on-Sea local election candidates 2016

southend civic centre

So the nominations have closed, and we have the full and final list of the candidates for the Southend-on-Sea local elections.

To my surprise, there are four full slates — from the Tories, Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens — and UKIP are only one seat short. There are also a few interesting Independent candidates scattered around, and an Indie-on-Indie battle in Shoeburyness, which changes the dynamic there.

As in previous years, Labour candidates are in bold, whilst defending incumbents are in italics.  There are five wards this year where the incumbent is not standing for re-election.

Southend-on-Sea local election candidates 2015

Nominations for the local elections in Southend-on-Sea closed at 4.00 p.m. yesterday. A third of the council seats are up for re-election in addition to two by-elections. This means that there are 19 seats up for election in total. The election will take place on May 7th, and the deadline for registering to vote is 20th April.

Below is the breakdown of the numbers of candidates standing by party, and the full list of nominated candidates.

Party Seats for re-election Seats contested Overall Seats
Conservatives 11 19 19
Independent 3 15 13
Labour 3 19 9
UKIP 1 8 5
Liberal Democrat 1 19 5
Green Party 0 18 0

(A note on Independents: some independents are more independent than others. Not all of the independents on the ballot paper are part of the official Independent Party Group. Some are genuine independents, such as Lucy Courtenay in Chalkwell, and some seem to be Independent UKIP, such as Alex Moyies in West Shoebury. I will be looking into and trying to clarify this.)

A few thoughts on the statement of nominated persons released today for the Southend local elections 2014:

  • A full slate of 18 candidates fielded by the three major parties: Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
  • Of the rest UKIP have fielded 12, there are 9 independents (though I’m not sure how many are standing for the Independent Party Group), 3 Green Party candidates, and bizarrely one National Front.
  • I am deeply skeptical about the independent candidate for St Luke’s, whose name is down as ABC. I suspect it’s either a mistake by the returning officer, or (more likely) a cynical ploy to be top of the ballot.
  • I’m not sure what the story is with Andrew Mooring in Eastwood Park, down as representing the “Local Conservatives”. Are the other Conservatives not local then?
  • 12 sitting councillors are standing for re-election (not including Martin Terry, who has resigned his Westborough seat). Two sitting councillors, however, have moved wards: Lib Dem councillor Barry Godwin (from Leigh to Belfairs) and Conservative Fay Evans (from Belfairs to West Leigh)

Full List of Candidates for Wokingham Local Elections

It was announced yesterday, and honestly I had hoped to get this list up then. Sadly, though, my attempts at McGyver-ing an internet connection to get hold of the full list (I’ve been visiting family in the sunny North East over Easter) met with failure.

But here it is: the list of candidates for all 18 contest wards in Wokingham Borough this May. I’ve highlighted Labour candidates in italics. The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are both fielding full slates. Labour are standing 14 candidates, UKIP 7 and the Green Party 13. There are 2 independents.

I’m a little surprised at the number of councillors not standing for re-election. Eight elections will be without an incumbent on the ballot paper- with none of the three Lib Dem councillors up this year seeking to keep their seats. Which seems a little…well, odd.

But here’s that list in full:
