01 “The Wars to Come” (Game of Thrones season 5) [SPOILERS]

game of thrones season 5

Not to go all hipster on you, but it wasn’t that long ago that I could mention A Song of Ice and Fire, and would be still be greeted by a room of blank expressions. That is still, to a degree, true, but if I mention Game of Thrones almost everyone has a theory and opinion.

It’s not, no matter what anyone tells you, a bad thing. Game of Thrones has thoroughly earned its popularity, by being incredibly bold for a mainstream TV show. It has kicked (…and stabbed. And shagged -Ed) its way into common cultural awareness.

GoT - Tyrion trial

After a week’s break — for reasons which are, I presume, American in nature — Game of Thrones is back. And after Mockingbird’s shocking ending — and shocking middle…and just generally shocking start to finish, I guess — there is plenty of anticipation

Oh, the Red Wedding was all very impressive, and the Jamie-Brienne storyline was outstandingly done (well done to Nikolaj Coster-Walder and Gwendoline Christie). But on the whole, it dragged.

Scene after scene of Theon and Ramsay Snow, which took ten episodes to go nowhere. Bran creeping northwards at a frankly coma-inducing pace. And endless — endless — scenes of Jon Snow making that feeling-sorry-for-myself face and apparently knowing nothing.

Six episodes into season four, that is plainly not a charge which can be levelled this time around.

02 “The Lion and the Rose” (Game of Thrones season 4) [SPOILERS]

game of thrones the lion and the rose

Bloody hell.

Considering I was endlessly whining that the last season dragged, stretching out half a season’s story to fill ten episodes, season four hasn’t half started with a bang. The above the spoiler line is going to be short this week, because I have a lot of things to discuss.

So if you’re reading this on the home page, then beware of clicking the Read on… link. If you’ve clicked through to the article itself, be warned: here be spoilers.
